Save Time and Money: Conduct a Thorough Novelty Search Before Filing Your Patent Application
Patent drafting is the art of creating clear, concise specifications that comprehensively describe your invention.
Patent prosecution involves the interactions between applicants, their representatives, and the patent office regarding a patent or patent application.
Trade marks, whether registered or unregistered, act as a 'mark of origin' to ensure customers recognise and identify your products or services as coming from your company.
Trade mark prosecution is the process of interacting with the trade mark office to get your trade mark officially registered.
We expertly handle contentious trademark matters, leveraging our deep expertise and commitment to clear communication to resolve disputes and protect your brand effectively.
Christopher Robertson is an expert consultant who worked for years as a patent examiner at the Patent Office. Patent and trade mark attorneys are specialist lawyers who have qualified to be registered as attorneys. To find a patent attorney, visit the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys. To find a trade mark attorney, visit the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys.
Robertson IP exists to make the intellectual property system accessible to people who cannot afford the fees of attorneys, although we have other clients who use our services because we are fast, friendly and efficient. Typically, using the services of an attorney will cost about three times as much as using our services.
We are authorised to act on your behalf in patent, trade mark and design matters before the UK IPO. This means that we can do most of the same work as patent or trade mark attorneys, except when it comes to things like courts and litigation. We are not authorised to carry out reserved legal activities as defined by the Legal Services Act 2007. Communication with us is not privileged. Unlike attorneys, we are not regulated by any professional body. Our insurance is limited to £500,000, which is considerably lower than that of an attorney.

Every case is different, but a UK patent application filed with Robertson IP will typically cost between £2,500 and £3,500 to get granted.
Yes, absolutely. Many of our customers have a tight budget, and we are happy to come up with a plan to give you as much help as possible within your budget.
In the UK, it takes between two and four years for a patent to be granted.
There isn’t a single ‘worldwide patent’, but there are ways to simplify the process of applying for your patent in different countries. For example, the European Patent Office can examine and grant a single patent application which can then be validated in many European countries. And the Patents Cooperation Treaty allows you to have a single international search and provisional examination process, before choosing in which countries you wish to apply for full examination.
We don’t keep statistics like this, because they aren’t valuable. When a professionally drafted patent application is not granted, it is usually because the applicant chose not to pursue it any further, or because it was found not to be novel or inventive by the Patent Office. Neither of these reasons are within our control.
We appreciate that many customer prefer fixed cost services rather than billable hours. We are happy to consider this and will negotiate a price based on the particular circumstances where appropriate.
No you don’t, but we are happy to provide one anyway. We always treat all of our clients’ information in the strictest confidence, and as patent professionals there is an implied confidentiality agreement with us. Nevertheless, we are happy to sign a confidentiality agreement or non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with you for your peace of mind. Just get in touch to arrange it.

Christopher has been fantastic to work with. I approached Christopher with an enquiry regarding trademarking my brand name. Christopher was very supportive and gave me fantastic advice on my options and next steps. I can't recommend Christopher and Robertson IP enough to anyone looking for advice on intellectual property.
