Robertson IP

Our values and why you should work with Robertson IP

Clear communication, Transparent pricing
& Continuous Improvement

Robertson IP was born out of a vision to revolutionise how people engage with intellectual property (IP) services. Our founder, Christopher Robertson spent over seven years as a Patent Examiner at the UK Intellectual Property Office and knows the system inside and out. At the time he specialised in electronic inventions such as electric vehicle charging and driving technologies. His experience highlighted a crucial gap: individuals and businesses without access to professional representation were at risk of undervaluing their inventions due to a lack of expertise in protecting them effectively.

Driven by the desire to bridge this gap, Christopher established Robertson IP in 2019 as an intellectual property boutique dedicated to providing transparent, expert support.

Our services encompass patent registrations, trade mark registrations, and designs, ensuring comprehensive protection for our clients’ innovations. At Robertson IP, you’re never just a number – we prioritise personalised attention and transparent costs to empower our clients throughout their IP journey.

From our humble beginnings as a one-person patent drafting agency, Robertson IP has evolved into an internationally recognised IP firm with clients and collaborators spanning the globe. Based in Cardiff, we manage IP portfolios for hundreds of clients, guiding them with integrity and expertise.

As we continue to grow, our commitment to our values remains unwavering.

At Robertson IP, we’re dedicated to leveling the playing field in intellectual property, empowering innovators to protect and maximise the value of their creations.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Christopher Robertson is an expert consultant who worked for years as a patent examiner at the Patent Office. Patent and trade mark attorneys are specialist lawyers who have qualified to be registered as attorneys. To find a patent attorney, visit The Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys | CIPA . To find a trade mark attorney, visit Homepage .

Robertson IP exists to make the intellectual property system accessible to people who cannot afford the fees of attorneys, although we have other clients who use our services because we are fast, friendly and efficient. Typically, using the services of an attorney will cost about three times as much as using our services.

We are authorised to act on your behalf in patent, trade mark and design matters before the UK IPO. This means that we can do most of the same work as patent or trade mark attorneys, except when it comes to things like courts and litigation. We are not authorised to carry out reserved legal activities as defined by the Legal Services Act 2007. Communication with us is not privileged. Unlike attorneys, we are not regulated by any professional body. Our insurance is limited to £500,000, which is considerably lower than that of an attorney.

Every case is different, but a UK patent application filed with Robertson IP will typically cost between £2,500 and £3,500 to get granted.

Yes, absolutely. Many of our customers have a tight budget, and we are happy to come up with a plan to give you as much help as possible within your budget.

In the UK, it takes between two and four years for a patent to be granted.

There isn’t a single ‘worldwide patent’, but there are ways to simplify the process of applying for your patent in different countries. For example, the European Patent Office can examine and grant a single patent application which can then be validated in many European countries. And the Patents Cooperation Treaty allows you to have a single international search and provisional examination process, before choosing in which countries you wish to apply for full examination.

We don’t keep statistics like this, because they aren’t valuable. When a professionally drafted patent application is not granted, it is usually because the applicant chose not to pursue it any further, or because it was found not to be novel or inventive by the Patent Office. Neither of these reasons are within our control.

We appreciate that many customer prefer fixed cost services rather than billable hours. We are happy to consider this and will negotiate a price based on the particular circumstances where appropriate.

No you don’t, but we are happy to provide one anyway. We always treat all of our clients’ information in the strictest confidence, and as patent professionals there is an implied confidentiality agreement with us. Nevertheless, we are happy to sign a confidentiality agreement or non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with you for your peace of mind. Just get in touch to arrange it.
